Mosaic Biomedicals wins the 5th edition of BioEmprenedorXXI
For the fifth year running, the 2012 program of BioEmprenedorXXI has promoted the creation and growth of innovative companies in the fields of life sciences through training, assessment and by accompanying entrepreneurs with a business idea or with a company just starting up.
The program analyses the viability of business ideas, offering mentoring and shows good practices and experiences and allows access to finance and to internationalisation of their projects.
The winning company of the fifth edition was Mosaic Biomedicals, a spin-off from the Vall d'Hebron Institut d'Oncologia (VHIO), founded by doctors Josep Baselga and Joan Seoane and the biotechnologist Judit Anido, who have developed new personalised therapies to eliminate tumour stem cells. They have also presented their first pharmacological product —in the pre-clinical phase— capable of reducing the recurrence of brain tumours by 51%.
Miru Medical Systems (Fundació Teknon), creator of an innovative product which allows the monitoring of the administration of medication at the hospital bedside and ProteoDesign (Universitat de Barcelona-Princeton University), offering research services to the biopharmaceutical industry, were the first and second finalists respectively.
During the five editions of the BioEmprenedorXXI program, 141 company and entrepreneurial projects have been presented and almost 175,000 euros in prizes has been awarded. Of all the requests received, 57% (81 business projects) have benefitted from the accompaniment offered by the program; 34 of these projects have been set up as companies and 13 more are under way. These companies have created, up to now, 146 jobs. This information was recompiled from the memory of the event published to coincide with the presentation of the prizes at the fifth edition.
There is also special relevance in the group of actions including training, internationalisation and incubation (acceleration courses at University of Cambridge, the participation at a benchmark international fair for the sector in the Biocàpsules program or a year of access to the technological offer of the Parc Científic de Barcelona).
In this way, BioEmprenedorXXI, now promoted by “la Caixa” bank, Barcelona City Council (via Barcelona Activa) and Biocat —with support until 2012 from Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona and FECYT— has become consolidated as an important platform for the promotion of life sciences in Catalonia.
